High bilirubin levels can be a sign that your liver is damaged. If you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, take certain medications, or if you’re destroying more red blood cells than usual , it can increase your levels. Sometimes it might be caused by Gilbert’s syndrome — a harmless inherited disorder.

  • If there is a problem or you forget more than one dose, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
  • Antibiotics such as co-trimoxazole – fluid building up in the tummy can become infected; antibiotics can be used to help treat the infection or may be used in lower doses to prevent infection.

However, they’re not usually recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Corticosteroids, often known as steroids, are an anti-inflammatory medicine. If your liver is pressing on the nerve that leads to the diaphragm, you may have hiccups. The diaphragm is the sheet of muscle under the lungs that separates the chest from the abdomen.

Your appetite should go back to normal when you stop taking steroids. If you are worried about gaining weight, talk to your doctor or nurse. You usually take steroid tablets or liquids at set times each day for a number of days or weeks.

Steroids for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH)

Sometimes, when your disease is severe, you might be given by injection for a few days. Most people grow up with visits to the GP and the pharmacy and take medicine when they don’t feel well. Not because they want to, but because they want to get on with their life.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

When abused, anabolic steroids can cause baldness, erectile dysfunction, infertility, reduced sperm count, severe acne, shrunken testicles and excruciating stomach pain in men. You may also have heard of anabolic steroids, which are sometimes used without medical advice to increase muscle mass. They are different to the steroids we are talking about on this page.

Lifestyle Factors

You may have heard of the term steroid-induced hyperglycaemia before. This is different to steroid-induced diabetes because it affects people who already have diabetes. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a group of commonly used painkillers. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so.

The latest prosthetic joints have a lifespan of 10 to 20 years, and some function may not be restored after a damaged joint is replaced by a prosthetic one. Your doctor may also refer you to other services that might be able to help you with your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
