Obama in Israel News Round-Up

Sen. Barack Obama is visiting Israel and the West Bank. Here is a recap of his trip:

  • Obama arrived and immediately confirmed his commitment to Israel. [Ha’aretz]
  • He met with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, President Shimon Peres and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu; Obama criticized Iran’s nuclear policies. [YNet]
  • He also went to Ramallah to meet with Palestinain Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. [Al Jazeera]
  • He gave his condolences via phone to the Goldwasser family. [Jerusalem Post]
  • Wearing a white yarmulke, Obama also toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum and Memorial… [AP]
  • …And the McCain campaign quickly responded to some of his comments there. [Huffington]
  • No matter how much credit some of the Iraqi leaders might have given Obama earlier this week, much of the Middle East is still wary of the junior senator and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. [CNN]
  • Later, Obama will meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem, fly by helicopter to Sderot and then return to Jerusalem to meet Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. This evening, he’ll tour the Western Wall. [WSJ]
